“ …the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.””
Have you ever been afraid? Afraid to speak? Afraid to act in kindness? Afraid to greet a stranger? After the death and resurrection of Jesus, the Disciples were hiding in fear. They were afraid that they would be arrested, beaten, and killed like Jesus was.
Those are reasonable reasons to fear. But something wondrous happened. Jesus showed himself to them, to bring the Advocate he promised, yes, the Holy Spirit. The Acts of the Apostles tell of another account, of the disciples being together in prayer, and the Holy Spirit came upon them like tongues of fire.
Then the real miracle happened. The fear that kept them locked behind closed doors vanished, and they went out and spoke to others, proclaiming the good news. The Holy Spirit turned them from being frightened cowards, to fearless evangelists, full of love and courage for the Lord God.
And you? Do you long for such courage? Do you desire to speak about Jesus? By your baptism and confirmation you have it within you. Call upon the Spirit! Ask for His gifts!
And go, set the world on fire with God’s love!
